In a called meeting held Sept. 25, the Opelika City Schools Board of Education approved the low bid from Whatley Construction, LLC in Opelika for Carver Primary School classroom additions.
The total bid, including the base bid and alternate bids for classroom construction and rated windows, is $2,057,849. Superintendent Dr. Mark Neighbors said the budgeted amount is $2.2 million, which allows money for anything extra that might be needed.
“We are going to really improve the front of the building,” Neighbors said. “There will be a canopy over the sidewalk for students to stand under. A row of windows at the front of the school will give more visibility and better security. Visitors will be able to go into the office without going into the building.”
According to Neighbors, the project will take about nine months to complete.
“I think the community will be pleased with it,” he said.
