Southern Union is offering summer golf camps. Two sessions are happening on July 26 – 28, at The Greens at Auburn (4315 Golf Club Dr.).
“The main goal of the camp is just to grow the game and get more people involved and playing at a younger age,” said Jamie McQuaker, leader of the camp and Southern Union head golf coach. “… And expose them to some decent coaching and some good fundamentals and give them a fun environment so they understand that golf is a life-long game they can play. That it’s just something that can benefit them later in their life in business, in relationships or just in health.”
At the camp, participants can expect to learn all aspects of the game, including:
– Ball striking
– Chipping
– Putting
– Bunker play
– Shot selection.
Course management.
The first session is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and is tailored for beginner to intermediate golfers in grades 4 to 8.
“This camp is structured for beginner golfers to instill fundamentals and good practice habits,” read a Southern Union Facebook post.
“We cover just basics, fundamentals from grip, posture and alignment,” McQuaker added.
The second session is from 1 to 5 p.m., and is tailored for more advanced golfers at the high school level.
According to the Facebook post, “This camp is structured for advanced level high school golfers with aspirations to play at the next level.”
“We work a little bit more on technical stuff,” McQuaker said. “Swing path, trajectory, hitting some different shots, making sure they have good technique that is repeatable and consistent.”
This is the first year Southern Union is hosting this camp. Registration costs $150; call (334) 559-0887 or email Jamie McQuaker (jmcquaker@suscc.edu) to register. Bringing your own clubs is strongly recommended.
“If they don’t [have clubs] we have some that they can utilize, but we don’t have a bunch for everybody,” McQuaker said.
Snacks and water will be provided. Payment can be made to the Southern Union Foundation (Cash App: $SUFoundation).
