Opelika city and school officials are taking steps to prepare for inclement winter weather that is expected to arrive in the area this afternoon.

Meteorologists expect that the Opelika-Auburn communities will start seeing snow flurries later this evening at 7 p.m., with the possibility of dangerous driving conditions developing in the hours following.

Opelika City Schools announced they will be closed Wednesday and have cancelled all after-school activities today with the exception of extended day, according to their Facebook page.

A City of Opelika press release from this morning stated that City Hall, Lewis Cooper Jr. Memorial Library, Parks and Recreation and all other departments will close at 3:30 p.m. today, and will remain closed tomorrow. Additionally, there will be no garbage pickup.

The planned city council meeting will take place tonight at 7 p.m.
