The Opelika City Council appointed J. Kevin Royal to the Opelika City Schools Board of Education March 3. As of April 1, 2015, Royal assumed the remainder of the term served by Mr. Robert T. Meadows, III who retired from the Board at the end of March after serving since 1992.
“We are sad to see Mr. Meadows leave, but are very pleased to have Dr. Royal join the OCS Board of Education.  He is very involved in the community and will bring great experience and enthusiasm to the board,” stated Dr. Mark Neighbors, OCS Superintendent.
Dr. Royal is a physician with Internal Medicine Associates, P.C.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Birmingham Southern College and his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, AL.  Dr. Royal completed his internship and residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  Dr. Royal served as Chief of Staff at East Alabama Medical Center from 2009-2011 and currently serves as President of the Lee County Medical Society. Royal is married to Ellen L. Royal, M.D. and they are parents to three children, Emma, Patrick and Benjamin.
“As a parent of three school age children, I have seen firsthand how Opelika City Schools serves the youth of our community,” commented Royal. “I am excited to help support that crucial mission.”  The OCS Board of Education April 28 meeting will be Royal’s first official monthly board meeting since being appointed.
