Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has selected 27 medical students from four medical schools in Alabama to receive scholarships. As a condition of these scholarships, the recipients agree to practice as primary care or behavioral health physicians in underserved areas of Alabama after graduation.

“I commend each of these students for being selected for this special scholarship,” said Tim Vines, president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. “We are truly grateful for their willingness to serve and provide quality healthcare to those who live in many of the underserved area in our state.”

Congratulations to the following recipients:

Edward Via College of Medicine (VCOM, Auburn)

Alexandra Korshun; Cleveland, Tennessee

Caitlin St Blanc; Franklin, Louisianna

Crystal Smith; Gallion, Alabama

Danielle Elmore; Gurley, Alabama

James Wisdom; Newton, Alabama

Jessen Highfield; Centre, Alabama

Rachel Snider; Anniston, Alabama

Rebekah Kurtaneck; Buena Park, California

The majority of Alabama’s counties do not have enough primary care and behavioral health physicians. To address this statewide need, Blue Cross continues to invest in the future of its Primary Care Physician Network by providing scholarship opportunities to VCOM, UAB, USA and ACOM.
