September 28, 1922 – January 11, 2017

Dr. Walter Pratt Kennon, 94, of Opelika passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at East Alabama Medical Center.  A funeral service for Dr. Kennon was held at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 13, 2017, in the chapel officiated by Reverend Rick Lane. Interment followed in Rosemere Cemetery.
Dr. Kennon is preceded in death by his parents, Warren Perry Kennon and Hattie Laura Kennon.  He is survived by his cousins, Jeanette Walker, Charles Huling, and Bobby Huling, all of Opelika.
Walter Kennon proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946.   He is a 1946 graduate of Auburn University where he also served as an Assistant Professor in the School of Business.  Dr. Kennon received his M.B.A. in 1948, followed by his Ph.D in 1954, both from the University of Chicago.  Dr. Kennon spent his career as a systems programmer at IBM in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1961 until he retired in 1987.  After his retirement from IBM, he returned to Auburn where he loved working and attending classes at his alma mater.  Dr. Kennon retired from teaching at the Auburn University School of Business in 1993.
He was passionate about visiting the elderly in local nursing homes and was a life-long member of First United Methodist Church of Opelika.  In lieu of flowers, Dr. Kennon would request your donation be sent to First United Methodist Church of Opelika.
The family would like to thank the staff at Oak Park Assisted Living for the care Dr. Kennon received, especially his caregivers Mary Ligon, Melinda Sanford, Cathy Moore, and Melinda Nunn.
