A graveside service for Lloyd Kenneth “Sonny” Owens Sr., 75, of Opelika, Alabama was Feb 9, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Rosemere Cemetery. The Reverend Earl Ballard officiated.

Mr. Lloyd Kenneth Owens Sr. who died Feb. 4, 2021 at his lake home in Tallapoosa County, Alabama was born March 7 in Opelika.

Sonny was an Army Veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. He was in the third brigade 25th infantry division where he was a radio telephone operator. He was honored to have served his country and received the Army Commendation Medal for heroism and two Purple Hearts.

Later in his life, he participated with Newnan High School history class where he shared his experiences of the war with students. He enjoyed sharing his experience with these students and helping them understand his duties during the war.

He was a member of several Vietnam Veterans Organizations and a member of the local American Legion in Opelika.

He is survived by his son Lloyd Kenneth “Ken” Owens, Jr. of Opelika, and his son John Samuel Owens (Nichole) of White House, Tennessee. His grandson Lloyd Kenneth “Trey” Owens, III of Opelika. His grandson, Aaron Kenneth Owens of White House, Tennessee and his granddaughter Arica Katlyn Abell (Kenny) of White House. His brother Harry Owens (Glenda) of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is preceded in his death by his beloved wife, Mary Jill “Polly” Owens of Opelika.

In lieu of flower, donations can be made to Bethany house in Auburn, Alabama.
