Special to the
Opelika Observer

The City of Opelika invites the public to join city officials Nov. 11 in celebrating Veterans Day and pausing to thank military veterans.
The morning of activities begins with a special breakfast for veterans and their families at Irish Bred Pub in downtown Opelika.  Owner Steve Nutter and the Happy Hour Rotary Club, an area satellite club of the Opelika Rotary Club, will be serving breakfast “Thank you for your sacrifice and service.”  The breakfast is free for our veterans; however, donations of $5 will be accepted for the benefit of the Wounded Warrior Project for Alabama Veterans.
At 10 a.m., a special Veterans Day Service will be held at the Veterans Memorial Monument at City Hall, featuring a guest speaker, Alabama’s Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Perry Smith. In case of rain, the service will be held inside City Hall.
Following the service, the Museum of East Alabama, located at 121 S. 9th St., will host a special reception at 11 a.m. to honor all veterans.
All city offices will be closed on Nov. 11, except for Lewis Cooper Jr. Memorial Library and The Opelika SportsPlex. The library will be open for regular hours and the SportsPlex will be open from 5 a.m. to noon.
