OPINION —
The 2026 high school baseball season came to a tough close for the Opelika Bulldogs, who finished the year at 18–21 after a late stumble that underscored just how unforgiving area play can be.
Opelika dropped nine of its final 11 games, including all six area contests, a downturn that ultimately defined the final chapter of the season.
That closing stretch ended last week with a three-game sweep at the hands of Central, as the Red Devils secured second place in the area and officially brought Opelika’s season to an end. Central took the series by scores of 6–2, 7–6 and 3–1, controlling the pace of the matchup even when Opelika pushed them to the wire.
Despite the disappointing result, the series was not without bright spots for the Bulldogs. Several Opelika players stood out both offensively and defensively, continuing to showcase a core that head coach Bart Butler believes will be the foundation of future success. Tyson Prince delivered consistent at-bats and solid defense, while Whit Cooper provided leadership and timely production. Siggers and C. Gardner contributed steady performances in key moments, and Cummings, Pilate and Peoples were reliable on both sides of the ball throughout the series.
Those individual efforts, however, were not enough to overcome Central’s execution and situational play. In the opener, Opelika struggled to generate offense against Central pitching, falling 6–2. Game two was the most competitive of the series, a back-and-forth battle that saw Opelika come up just short in a 7–6 loss. Central closed things out in the finale with a 3–1 win, capitalizing on limited scoring chances and applying pressure when it mattered most.
Now completing his second season at the helm, Butler remains focused on progress rather than disappointment. While the record and late-season results were not what Opelika hoped for, the Bulldogs showed growth in stretches and competed against quality opponents throughout the year.
With experience gained and a young core continuing to develop, Opelika baseball will look to turn those lessons into wins next spring.
The Opelika Lady Bulldogs softball team is enjoying a strong season and momentum appears firmly on their side. Sitting at 20–15, Opelika had an impressive week, picking up three convincing wins over area and county opponents.
The Lady Bulldogs opened the week with a solid 5–1 victory over Central, setting the tone with strong pitching and timely hitting. They followed that up with a dominant 14–1 win over Benjamin Russell, showcasing offensive firepower and defensive efficiency. The week concluded with a hardfought 9–4 win against Beulah, rounding out a trio of performances that underline just how well this team is playing down the stretch.
With confidence building and consistency emerging, Opelika softball is positioning itself well as postseason approaches. The Lady Bulldogs have shown balance at the plate, resilience in close games, and an ability to handle pressure — traits that often separate teams still playing in May from those already looking ahead to next year.
In Opelika, one season ends while another continues to climb. The Bulldogs baseball program closes the book on a year full of challenges and growth, while the Lady Bulldogs softball team writes an encouraging chapter that is still very much in progress.
