Top, 150 bowls made by the pottery class of the Opelika Parks and Recreation Department will soon be available for purchase as a part of the bi-annual Empty Bowls project that benefits the Food Bank of East Alabama. Bottom, Charlie Mabry works on a potter’s wheel.
Sherie Spain, Pottery Director, Opelika Parks & Recreation, recently provided a preview of the bi-annual Empty Bowls Project, a joint fundraiser with Opelika and Auburn hosting. The first project was hosted in Opelika in 2013. In 2014, Auburn Parks & Recreation hosted the program. This year it’s Opelika’s time for a second turn.
Handcrafted bowls by volunteers will sell for $10 each with money raised also going to the Food Bank of East Alabama. Their goal is to make and sell 1,000 bowls, which when all are sold will raise $10,000. Spain said they already have 880 bowls finished.
“There will be a pre-sale of bowls from Nov. 12-25. It will be a good time to select Christmas gifts,” Spain said.
To purchase a bowl, stop by the Pottery Department at the Denson Recreation Center in Opelika located on Denson Drive. The center is open from 9 a.m.- 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday and closes at 4 p.m. on Fridays.
The actual soup bowl event will be held Feb. 13, 2016. The meal will offer soup, bread and water.
Think of someone not feeling well and receiving a bowl with a smiling animal face filled with peppermints, wrapped and tied with a bow.
Wouldn’t that make anyone feel better quickly?
