OPELIKA — The city of Opelika is giving its longtime Burgers & Badges fundraiser a fresh twist this October. Municipal Mayhem builds on the food, fellowship and friendly rivalry that made Burgers & Badges a community favorite.
Municipal Mayhem will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Municipal Park. The event will feature grilled burgers, concessions, team challenges, outdoor games, train rides and music.
“United Way supports programs that serve our neighbors when they need help the most,” Opelika Mayor Eddie Smith said. “Municipal Mayhem gives our employees and community a fun way to come together, enjoy some friendly competition and make a meaningful difference right here in Lee County. No matter which team wins, our entire community benefits.”
In a game-changing shift this year, the city is dividing its employees into three teams. During Municipal Mayhem, team members will face off in a series of fast, funny and unpredictable competitions. Audience members will not simply watch the action — their donations can help shape it. The community is invited to attend, make a donation and see who claims the Municipal Mayhem championship.
“Municipal Mayhem is designed to bring out the energy, creativity and competitive spirit of our employees while keeping the focus on an important cause,” Community Relations Officer Leigh Krehling said. “We want people to come out and support the teams, wear their team colors, cheer loudly, enjoy a burger and have a great time helping United Way strengthen our community.”
Guests can support the campaign throughout the event by purchasing food, drinks, train rides, Challenge Tickets and other concessions. Planned concessions include $5 burger and chip combos, as well as soft drinks, water, cookies, popcorn, boiled peanuts and lemonade. Train rides will be available for $2. Additional family-friendly games may also be offered.
United Way of Lee County supports local programs focused on education and youth development, financial stability, health and wellness, basic needs and emergency assistance.
