In correlation with the one-year anniversary of the March 3, 2019 tornadoes that decimated portions of Lee County, the Opelika Observer is working on a publication that will chronicle the events of that day, along with stories of generosity, survival and ultimately – hope.
“We decided to take on this project because of the demand for copies of our newspapers for our coverage of the storms in the following weeks and the need to compile all that into one place. Plus, the magnitude of this weather event and its impact on Lee County is something that merited its own publication,” said Observer Publisher Michelle Key.
“The main goal of this project is to be able to use it to give back to the community in the form of a monetary donation to be used to continue the rebuilding efforts. We recognize that the recovery process is going to take a long time and we want the community to know that we are here to help them.”
“This is a passion project for us because the people affected by this are our neighbors, friends and, in some cases, our families. We want this to be a keepsake publication that people can look over time and time again and remember the events of that tragic day,” added Observer Editor Morgan Bryce.
