CONTRIBUTED BY THE CITY OF OPELIKA

OPELIKA — The city of Opelika, in partnership with local businesses, educational institutions and community stakeholders, is proud to highlight the continued success of the Opelika Latino Workforce Development (OLWD) program — a structured workforce and community integration initiative designed to support Latino families who choose to live and work in Opelika.

Grounded in the City’s long-term vision for economic and social development, OLWD provides clear guidance, education and support that lead to employment opportunities, career advancement and an improved quality of life — benefiting both participating families and the broader community.

“Since its launch, OLWD has graduated two classes and remained consistent with its original mission, approach and curriculum,” said Director of Workforce Development Greg Leikvold.   “The program begins with a voluntary evaluation process and then those who meet program requirements (no criminal record and engaged in the immigration process) are formally invited to participate in a comprehensive training experience focused on workforce readiness, legal awareness, cultural understanding and family stability.”

Key outcomes for participating families include:

• Increased understanding of U.S. culture, values and the rule of law

• Guidance and support in obtaining essential documentation such as work permits, passports, tax IDs and driver’s licenses

• Direct education on immigration law from an immigration attorney

• Practical tools to help parents prepare for productive careers and support their children’s educational success

Each OLWD session consists of six consecutive evening classes held at the Covington Recreation Center and includes instruction from city departments, Southern Union State Community College, local employers, legal professionals and community partners.

“OLWD is a true community collaboration,” said city of Opelika Economic Development Director John Sweatman. “This program helps our employers gain access to a better-prepared workforce, and Opelika benefits from a growing population of informed, engaged residents who are committed to thriving within the community.”
