AUBURN — Auburn City Schools Superintendent Dr. Cristen Herring recognized the success of three Auburn High School wrestling athletes. Cheyenne Penn was recognized for her success as the 6A-7A 100 State Champion. Molly Seidman was recognized for her success as the 6A-7A 107 State Champion and the 6A-7A State Tournament Most Valuable Wrestler. Lewis Miller was recognized for his success as the 7A 144 State Champion.
“I just want to congratulate these coaches,” said Auburn Athletic Director James Slaton. “Coach Register is in his third year. He was an Auburn wrestler, and he had a chance to come back and build the program. And then coach Van Akst is in his first year, there are two head coaches amongst the boys and girls, and they really work together. I’m very impressed with this group. They have what we believe is the best season in Auburn history.”
Herring recognized Slaton for becoming a Certified Athletic Director by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
“This is one of the highest levels of distinction for an athletic director,” Herring said. “The athletic director has to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in interscholastic athletic administration, and this voluntary process includes an evaluation of their background, experience, contributions and a rigorous, comprehensive written examination.”
“It was a great program, and it’s allowed me to now be able to teach,” Slaton said. “I’m going to be teaching at our state conference this year, and I’ve already started working on the next level, which is called a Certified Master Athletic Administrator, so that potentially I can teach nationally.”
