CONTRIBUTED BY FRIENDS OF WOOD DUCK NATURE PRESERVE

OPELIKA —

With the IRS moving the deadline for filing taxes this year from the usual April 15 to April 18, it is an opportunity to take a break from income tax forms and go for a morning walk in the woods.

Members of Friends of Wood Duck Nature Park will guide groups over the two miles of trails to viewing blinds to observe waterfowl, including our local wood ducks and Canada geese. It is a bit early, but there’s a good chance of seeing newly-hatched ducklings and goslings present.

In addition to seeing the resident birds, late migrating birds might still be present. On one walk, four bald eagles were spotted. Other attractions include spring flowers and ferns and possible sightings of groundhogs. And there is always something unexpected — perhaps a salamander or a tree frog. This is also a good time to brush up on tree identification.

Early-bird refreshments will be served at 7:30 a.m. Walks start at 8 a.m.
