More than 150 students, school personnel and first responder’s participated in a “reunification” training exercise on Tuesday. The Lee County Emergency Management Agency hosted this exercise and partnered with the Lee County Sheriff’s office in order to train and exercise reuniting students with their parents after a “mocked incident” at their school where it was necessary to relocate the students for their safety. This exercise tested the school transportation system as well as the reunification plan for getting students safely back with their parents/guardians. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office ensured exercise scene safety for all of the participants.

The Lee County PIO Task Force for crisis communications exercised its media staging area and “on scene” capabilities during a school incident. Lessons were learned and steps were taken to improve upon those lessons so all partners are prepared should a real incident unfold. Director Rita Smith stressed the importance of this training and coordination with SRO’s (School Resource Officers), faculty and staff. “Protecting our students in Lee County is high on our list of priorities and all of the participants today distributed excellence with the same goal in mind, getting the student safely reunited their parents as quickly as possible,” Smith said.
