Ice skating has come to Lee County.
A parking lot on East Magnolia in Auburn has been transformed into a temporary ice skating rink, and the people of Opelika and Auburn are lining up to experience this winter treat. Whitney Morris, Auburn City employee, says that at least 300 people turned out on Saturday, despite the cold temperatures. Workers began assembly of the rink in the early morning hours of December 15. It took four hours to construct the rink which is made of a high density polymer and sprayed with a compound to make it slick.
The space accommodates up to 30 skaters at a time. Amsterdam Cafe is on site with a food truck, as well as University Donuts. Hot chocolate is also available. Tickets are $5, which includes skate rental. “The City of Auburn kept the cost low to make this fun for everyone. We wanted to give back to the people of Auburn and Opelika.”
The event runs through December 30. Hours vary, according to the weather. Details are on the City of Auburn website and Facebook.
