City elections to be held Aug. 23

Fuller, Jones, Gray to face opposition

11 Opelikans qualified for the Aug. 23 city election. Mayor Gary Fuller, Councilwoman Patsy Jones and Councilman Larry Gray will face opposition in their respective races. Lee County Commissioner John-Andrew Harris is challenging Fuller, Greg Jones is challenging Patsy Jones for Ward 1 and Oscar Penn, Nelson Marsh and Tiffany Pitts are running against incumbent Larry Gray for the Ward 2 seat. Council president Eddie Smith (Ward 4), David Cannon (Ward 5) and Dozier Smith T (Ward 3) faced no opposition and were elected at Tuesday’s council meeting to their respective seats.
The last day to register to vote is Aug. 8. Those who wish to vote absentee can apply Aug. 9-18 in person at City Hall or by mail. Ballots should be mailed to: City of Opelika, c/o Bob Shuman, P.O. Box 390, Opelika, AL 36803, and must be delivered to city hall by noon Aug. 23 to be counted.
