Caroline Lipscomb Hassanpour, 58, of Solomons, Maryland, formerly of Huntingtown, Maryland, passed away January 8 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. She was born in Lee County, Alabama, to the late Andrew and Carolyn Ellis Lipscomb. Caroline, just like her grandfather, father, and uncle graduated from Auburn University School of Pharmacy in 1979. She received her Master’s Degree from the University of Mississippi. She has worked as a pharmacist for more than 35 years, currently working as a floating pharmacist for CVS in Southern Maryland. Caroline was an active member of Christ Church in Port Republic of Maryland often seen serving in the church and hosting the fellowship hour.
She is survived by her husband, Mike M. Hassanpour; mother of Madeleine C. LaTour and Katherine A. LaTour; stepmother of Parisa L. Hassanpour, Kristopher M. Hassanpour, Nora E. Hassanpour, Kimberly A. Hassanpour, and Joshua O. Hassanpour; grandmother of Gabriel Garza, Michael Garza, Ambria Toland, Braylon Hassanpour, Garrett Toland, Araeme Delgado, Ethan Delgado, Kyler Hassanpour, and Sayla Hassanpour. She is also survived by her siblings, Andrew D. “Lan” Lipscomb, James Lipscomb and Katherine Lipscomb Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family received friends July 2 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home in Opelika. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Interment is private. Memorial contributions may be made to any cancer research. Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home directed.

Bernice S. Greenlee
Funeral service for Mrs. Bernice S. Greenlee, 80, of Opelika was 2 p.m. June 29 at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel. Reverend Charlie Bolt officiated. Burial was held in Garden Hills Cemetery. Visitation was June 28 from 6-8 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.
Mrs. Greenlee passed away at Bethany House in Auburn June 26. She was born February 15, 1935, in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. She was a resident of Opelika since 1967. She retired from Quantegy, Inc., after 29 years of service.
Mrs. Greenlee is survived by her sons, Art (Barbara) Greenlee, Jr. and Mike (Diane) Greenlee; daughters, Denise (Bill) Jones and Kandy (Phil) Nestor; grandchildren: William Jones, Jr., Heath Greenlee, Hayden Greenlee, Robbie Greenlee, and Alyssa Tillery; great-grandchildren, Mason Tillery and Abbey Tillery; brothers, Leon Styes and Harold Styes; sister, Peggy Greenlee. She is preceded by husband, Arthur R. Greenlee, Sr.; parents, Virgil and Mary Styes; brothers, Billy Styes, Charlie Styes, and James Styes; sisters, Julia Robertson, Darriah Cahnnel, Geraldine Styes.

Matthew James Leavelle
Memorial service for Mr. Matthew James Leavelle, 30, of Columbus, Georgia, was 4 p.m. June 29 at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel. Reverend Ronald Sumners officiated. Visitation was June 29 from 2-4 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.
Mr. Leavelle passed away at St. Frances Hospital in Columbus, Ga. He had spent most of his life around the Opelika and Columbus area. He attended Cascade Hills Baptist Church of Columbus.
Mr. Leavelle is preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Stella Leavelle, Shirley Hand; and brother, Andy Sumners.
Mr. Leavelle is survived by his mother, Nancy Hand Bauerntind (Roy) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; father, John T. Leavell, Sr. of Opelika; brothers, Paul (Shelly) Sumners of Birmingham, John Leavelle, Jr. (Julie) of Lexington, North Carolina; finance, Rebekah Taylor of Columbus, Georgia; grandparents, Jimmy Hand (Linda); and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Lisa Lowery Carter
Mrs. Lisa Lowery Carter, age 53, of Auburn, Alabama, passed away June 25 at the East Alabama Medical Center after a brief battle with a very rare form of cancer. Visitation was June 29, from 3-4 p.m. at the Providence Baptist Church (East Campus) located at 2807 Lee Road 166 in Opelika. The funeral service followed at 4 p.m. Dr. Rusty J. Sowell officiated. Interment followed at Memorial Park in Auburn. Pallbearers will be friends and work colleagues.
Lisa was born in Troy, Alabama, on October 13, 1961 to Paul and Irma Lowery. She was a devoted and loving wife to her husband Robby. She was an amazing mother to her two daughters, Jessica and Jamie as well as to many others. She was a dedicated employee at Auburn University in the School of Veterinary Medicine in the Sugg Lab Research Department.
Lisa was a phenomenal cook who loved to entertain her family and loved ones. She loved the Lord and the natural beauty of His creation. She was a selfless individual who put others first. Lisa had a kind heart, a sweet soul and was the definition of strength; she truly was superwoman. Lisa was beautiful in every aspect and made the world a better place.
She is survived by Robby, her husband of 35 years; two daughters, Jessica and Jamie, Jamie’s fiancé Russ Long; her mom, Irma Lowery; and three brothers, Lawrence (Jeanette), Wade (Joy), and Jeff. Nieces and nephews include Nathan Lowery, Kayla (Danny and Kaydence) Wineberg, Paul and Dalton Lowery and a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Lowery.

William A. “Bill” Browning
On June 26 William A. “Bill” Browning peacefully passed away at Cambridge Place in Opelika, at the age of 83. Bill was born in Tallapoosa County. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Waldo Jackson and his father and mother, Lander J. Browning and Rebecca Young Browning.
Bill was a member of the Opelika Fire Department with 32 years of service. He retired in the position of Assistant Fire Chief. Following his retirement, he continued his education at Southern Union, becoming an air conditioning technician. Bill also served in the Army during the Korean War.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jacquelyn “Jackie” and daughters, Teresa McCard and Susan Galloway (Chip). He is also survived by three grandsons, Andrew and Thad Matthews, and Warren “Bo” McCard. Bill is survived by one sister, Agnes Fuchs, and one brother, Harlan Browning (Elaine).
Visitation was held at the Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel June 27 from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services were June 28 at 2 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel. Reverend Lester Curry from Pine Level Missionary Baptist Church officiated. Bill will be buried in Suwannee County (Live Oak), Florida, with a service at Pine Level Missionary Baptist Church and interment to follow in Pine Level Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Bill’s request was for donations to be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sara Helen Penland
Sara Helen Penland passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 22, 2015. She was born in Opelika, Alabama, on September 15, 1927, was the daughter of Peyton P. and Katie Belle (Hardy) May. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Reverend Julian P. May.
Sara Helen graduated from Clift High School in Opelika at age 17. After high school, she worked as a secretary with WJHO radio, where she met her husband, Staff Sergeant Raymond D. Penland, the local Army recruiter who died in North Korea in 1950. She lived and worked for eight years in Albany, Georgia. Upon her return to Opelika, she worked for West Point Pepperell Cost Accounting Department until her retirement. Sara was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Opelika. She loved spending time with her friends and listening to live music, and was a fan of Big Band, and country. She was an avid reader and devoted Auburn fan.
Sara Helen is survived by two sons: Lieutenant Raymond C. Penland, USN (Ret), and his wife Candace S. Penland; Chief Yeoman, USN (Ret) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Stephen P. Penland of Opelika; her grandchildren, Raymond D. Penland II of Virginia Beach; Peyton J. Penland of Mason, Ohio, Adrian Graviet (Jason) of Toney, Alabama; and great-grandchildren, Clay and Sidney Graviet of Toney, Alabama.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 25 at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel with visitation one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The First United Methodist Church of Opelika, Alabama, or a charity of your choice in Sara Helen’s name.

Steven
Marcy Lang
Mr. Steven Marcy Lang, 61, of Auburn passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at Oak Park Retirement Center. Visitation was held Thursday, June 25 at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m. Funeral service followed at 11 a.m. in the Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel.
Born January 8, 1954, to Oliver and Nora England Lang, Steven was a lifelong resident of Auburn. He was a graduate of Auburn High School and Auburn University, holding degrees in Horticulture. Steve was best known for his magnificent Christmas light show presented annually at the home place on Fontaine Drive. The show was his gift to the entire community. Steven was a loving and kind man to all.
Mr. Lang is survived by his mother, Nora E. Lang of Auburn; sister, Robin Lang (Robert) Krchak of Mobile; niece and nephew, Jennie Krchak and Evan Krchak both of Mobile; and three beloved cats, Bubba, Scooter, and Britt.

Colonel Andrew W. “Andy” LaMar, Jr. (U.S. Army Ret.)
The celebration of a life well lived was held for Col. Andrew W. LaMar, Jr., in the main Sanctuary at Auburn United Methodist Church in Auburn at 11 a.m. June 30. Dr. George Mathison presided. Visitation was held in Hamil Court at AUMC beginning at 10:00 AM prior to the service. A private military internment ceremony was held previously in The Orchard, the private family cemetery.
Col. LaMar passed away due to a brief illness on June 25 at East Alabama Medical Center where, to the very end, he displayed the true colors of an officer and a gentleman.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and technicians at EAMC for providing skilled and attentive care.
Andrew W. “Andy” LaMar, Jr. was born in Birmingham, on December 6, 1922. His early years were full of change as he and his mother moved frequently with his father, Col. A.W. LaMar Sr., who worked in and commanded Civilian Conservation Corps camps around the country. Andy graduated from high school in Medford, Oregon, after becoming the state high hurdles champion in his senior year. In 1941 he enrolled at Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn to study electrical engineering and to run the high hurdles for legendary coach Wilbur Hutsell.
Andy entered the U.S. Army in April 1943 as a Private E-2. After completing the competitive exams, he was awarded a congressional appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He lettered in track prior to graduating and receiving a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1946. He attended the Infantry, Airborne and Glider Schools at Ft. Benning Georgia. Andy courted the lovely Jule Pitts DeGraffenried of Auburn, and they were married in The Auburn United Methodist Church Founders Chapel in 1947. They soon moved into the devastation of Post-war Europe with the U.S. Constabulary forces along the East-West border in Germany where he took command of a tank company in the 6th Armored Cavalry Regiment. During the Korean War, Andy served with the 73rd Tank Battalion in the U.S. 7th Infantry Division. At Ft. Campbell, Kentucky he commanded an Airborne Infantry Company in the 511th Airborne Infantry Regiment. Subsequent tours of duty included three years serving in the Military Assistance Advisory Group, U. S. Embassy Belgium, as an Armor Advisor to the Belgian Army and squadron commander in the 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fulda Germany. During his career, he attended and taught at Army Service Schools and served on the Army Staff in Washington, D.C.
Andy retired in 1972 after serving four years as Professor of Military Science at Auburn University. Following retirement from the military, he became involved in shopping center management. He managed the Village Mall in Auburn and another mall in Georgia. He served as President of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce in 1978.
In his retirement years, he loved and was faithfully committed to his family and friends. He was admired for the discipline and integrity that guided his every day by the many who benefited from his tireless and selfless attention. His wife Jule Pitts LaMar passed away in 1992, and two years later he married the beautiful Dixie Houseal of Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
Andy loved traveling the world with Dixie, gardening with son Bill, watching collegiate sports and playing cards down on the coast or with his poker buddies. He was a former long time member of the Rotary Club of Auburn. Andy was a founding Board member and great supporter of the Auburn Veterans Committee and the Veterans Scholarship Fund.
He was preceded in death by his parents Bertie Lee LaMar and Colonel A.W. “Wilton” LaMar, Sr., and his wife Jule Pitts LaMar.
Andy is survived by his children, Julie Shoemaker (Dale) of Bethesda, MD., Andy LaMar III (Pam) of Waverly, AL., Bill LaMar of Waverly, AL., and Lucy Lee LaMar of Auburn, AL., grandchildren Kate Shoemaker Pinard (Andy) of Edgewater, MD., Brooke Shoemaker of Washington, D.C., Will LaMar (Katie) of Niceville, FL., Becton LaMar (Kelly) of Auburn, AL., and great grandson Thomas Ward LaMar, step great grandchildren Madelynn and Brady Dickenson all of Auburn, AL., and great grandson Andrew Gentry LaMar and step great grandson DJ Hill of Niceville, FL.
He is survived by Dixie’s family: Dixie Rapuano (Ken) of Falls Church, VA, Sissy Powell (Bill) of Signal TN, Marian Hoffman (Mike) Irvington, NY, and grandchildren Taylor Rapuano, Scott Rapuano, Claire Rapuano, Will Rapuano all of Falls Church, VA, and Melissa Powell Street (Geoffrey), Mary Powell Bridges (Adam), Laura Powell all of Signal Mtn, TN, and Michael Hoffman, Matthew Hoffman, Walter Hoffman, all of Irvington, NY.
