The Opelika High Football Banquet was held last Sunday night at OHS. The 2012 team finished 10-5 and made history by advancing to the 6A championship game for the first time in school history.
The team, cheerleaders, coaches and families enjoyed a great southern-style meal along with a highlights video put together by Tracey Tidwell, video coordinator.
Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller, longtime booster member, spoke to the crowd about the impact this year’s team had on the City of Opelika. Fuller also thanked the team for earning a trip to the championship game.
The coaches gave away a few awards, captains voted by the players, GPA academic award and the “Mike Spain Character Award.” The winners are pictured in this paper. Kyle Puckett and Trip Powers won the GPA Academics award, Captains were JaKell Mitchell, Cartavious Washington, and Calvin Bryant.
The “Mike Spain Character Award” went to Demitri Oneal, a three-year player who never started, but had the best attitude on the team.
Junior JaKell Mitchell has been offered a scholarship by Duke University. This is the first of many offers that JaKell should get after next year’s season.
Congratulations JaKell!
