OPELIKA — A local nonprofit is inviting families to come together for a free event in downtown Opelika for an evening of inclusion, community and celebration.
Compassionate Hands of Hope will host its inaugural Autism-Acceptance Rainbow Picnic on the Square at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Lee County Courthouse Square.
“This event is about creating a space where every individual and family feels seen, supported and valued,” Compassionate Hands of Hope CEO Tenisha King said. “At Compassionate Hands of Hope, we believe inclusion starts with community, and this is what that looks like in action.”
There will be free food, music, games, community resources and camaraderie. A highlight of the evening will be a talent show for all kids to showcase their unique skills.
“Whether it’s drawing, reading, playing an instrument or organizing things, we want to celebrate them,” Compassionate Hands of Hope founder Janataka Holmes said. “No talent is too small.”
While this event centers on celebrating individuals with autism, it is open to the entire community and welcomes attendees of all backgrounds.
Holmes hopes this event will bring families together and build long-lasting relationships.
“I’m a seed planter. I want to build a community for individuals with autism and their families,” Holmes said. “I want to be there for the next parent and give them hope.”
Organizers are seeking volunteers and community partnerships to help make the event a success.
