OPELIKA — Southern Union State Community College announced a $3 million gift from the city of Opelika.
The City Council approved a resolution at this last week’s meeting to support capital improvements on Southern Union’s Opelika campus, helping to advance the college’s educational mission and enhancing resources for students and the community.
“The city’s commitment to our institution will have a transformative impact on our campus and our ability to serve our students and the wider region,” said SUSCC President Todd Shackett.
Southern Union is a major contributor to the region’s economy. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the college added $33.5 million to the income of its service area and supported more than 649 jobs.
“Southern Union has an outstanding relationship with the city,” said Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller. “We value their partnership and the difference that they make in attracting business and industry to our area.”
Long-term plans for the Opelika campus include renovation of existing science and technology labs and construction of new classroom buildings and a residence hall.
With campuses in Wadley, Opelika and Valley, SUSCC was founded in 1922 and is the second-oldest two-year college in Alabama. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate degrees. SUSCC is a member of the Alabama Community College System.
