LAFAYETTE — The LaFayette High School basketball camp was held and hosted by Trevond Barnes on July 12 and 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the high school gym. Middle school and high school age children were invited to participate.
“This year we had a smaller group comprised of mostly middle school age kids,” Barnes said. “That ended up being good for the campers because the coaches got to focus more on everyone individually. This was a super hard working bunch [of children] that was very respectful and caused no problems.”
Barnes said all participants saw improvement in their skills.
“They all got better within the drills that we gave them and did it with good energy,” he said. “All in all the I was very pleased with the effort from the campers. The focus this year was to continue teaching the fundamentals we went over last summer and to explain to the campers that despite being very young and inexperienced, they are ahead of the curve by starting at this age. If they continue to work this hard they will for sure catch up to and pass the older kids.
“Also we wanted to teach them it’s very important to take care of their bodies,” Barnes said. “You not only have to workout, but you also have to prioritize good nutrition and quality sleep.”
Campers were gifted protein powder, protein bars and sports drinks at the end of the camp to get them started on their journey to a healthier lifestyle.
The instructors for the camp were Barnes, Valley High School head JV coach Jamal Sims, current college basketball players Tae Burton and Jamarious Martin, and former college basketball player Justin Brooks.
The group gave a special thank you to the LHS staff for allowing them the opportunity to host the event. Principal Brock Johnson, Assistant Principal Patillo, Athletic Director Williams and coach Lewis were in full support of the venture and showed their appreciation. Also a big thanks to Travis Smith, the Rev. Michael T Stiggers and Cheryl Stiggers for donating and sponsoring the camp and to all the parents and volunteers.
“I am looking forward to doing this again next year,” Barnes said.
