Pre-registration for a new pre-k program in Opelika opened on Feb. 3 and will continue until the end of the school year.
Alabama’s First-Class Pre-K program, a state funded voluntary program for 4-year-old children, has provided the opportunity for pre-k education programs all over the state. The city of Opelika has two of these programs in place as well as a third in the works.
Program director Jolene Clark said that this Feb. 3 registration is a preliminary paper registration to help gauge the community’s interest. Seeing the public’s interest in this program will help when applying for a grant, which the program has not yet received.
Once the grant is received, registration will stay open for one month during which parents can apply online. When that registration closes, there will be a public lottery drawing to select students.
The program, opening fall 2020, will be located in Opelika High School at the Media Center entrance. Registration is also located at the high school.
In order to register for the program, one must be a resident of Opelika. There are no registration or enrollment fees. Students must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 2, 2020 to participate in the program.
