Bubba’s Medicine Shop will celebrate 40 years of serving Opelika this month.
According to Jeff Jerkins, current owner who has worked at Bubba’s for neatly 20 years, said Bubba Young first opened the shop in 1976. “I started working there when I came to Auburn for school, and I stayed after I graduated pharmacy school in 1996,” Jerkins said. “ I bought the shop in 2010 when Bubba got ready to retire. I never meant to stay in Lee County this long, but it has been a great place to live with great schools and a great community.” Bubba’s was Opelika’s first discount pharmacy. Jerkins said Young opened the pharmacy with a mission of helping the community and giving customers the most for their dollar. “We have continued that. We want to be a great resource to our customers, and we’re the kind of place that knows all of our customers by name. A lot of the people who worked here back then are still working with us now. We’re still that same hometown pharmacy,” Jerkins said. He also said that Bubba’s Medicine Shop tries to give back to the community as much as possible by supporting schools and local athletics and events.
“We’re all about giving back locally. We try to support as many local businesses as we can,” he said. In the spirit of supporting local business, Bubba’s will be giving out $40 gift certificates from Opelika’s businesses at their anniversary event on June 24. Burgers and hotdogs will be served for lunch at the all-day event, and merchandise from the shop will be given away or marked down by 40 percent. A health fair will also be held at Bubba’s the morning of the event. Free Italian ice will be served all day, and there will also be an inflatable jumper and games for children to enjoy.
