OPELIKA — Everyone is invited to join this casual walk hosted by Friends of the Preserve on Oct. 3. The walk begins at the pavilion with stops at two viewing blinds for observing ducks and other waterfowl. The walk is around 2 miles, but people may choose to leave at any time. We will travel slowly, taking notes on all the wonders of nature. Of special interest will be migrating warblers — the preserve has averaged 30 species each fall, August through October, the last three years, 30, 29 and 31. We also expect to see migrating butterflies, particularly Monarch and Cloudless Sulphurs, on the pollinator garden.
Friends will provide refreshments and coffee for early birds beginning at 7:30 a.m. The walk will start at 8 a.m. There will be several “loaner” binoculars available. Those of all levels of bird watching and nature appreciation are welcome.
Wood Duck Nature Park is site No. 10 on the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. We will meet at the pavilion, 3601 Waverly Parkway in Opelika, one-half mile from Birmingham Highway/US 280 intersection; GPS N 32*39,193’ W 085*.
