LEE COUNTY — Lee-Scott and Glenwood split success on the diamond last week, with the Lady Warriors edging a tight softball win while the Gators dominated in a three-game baseball series sweep.
Girls
In a game defined by strong pitching and limited offensive chances, Lee-Scott Academy edged Glenwood 2-1 on Thursday, April 9, in a tightly contested matchup that remained undecided until the final inning.
Both teams delivered impressive performances on the mound. Lee-Scott’s Addison Mezick and Glenwood’s Brooke Morrell each went the distance, keeping hitters off balance and preventing big innings. Mezick allowed just one hit and one unearned run while striking out three, while Morrell recorded seven strikeouts and gave up two runs — only one earned — on four hits.
Lee-Scott opened the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from McKenzie Johnson, bringing home the game’s first run. After that, both defenses settled in behind their pitchers, with scoring opportunities hard to come by on either side.
Glenwood found a way to even things up in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a Lee-Scott error at second to tie the game at 1-1 despite limited hits.
With the game still deadlocked in the seventh, Lee-Scott broke through with the biggest hit of the day. Karlee Baker delivered a double that drove in the go-ahead run, giving Lee-Scott a narrow 2-1 lead.
From there, the defense held on both sides, but Lee-Scott was able to close out the final inning to secure the win.
Offensively, both teams were held in check. Lee-Scott recorded one hit each from Baker, Sydney Dunlap, Sarah-Caroline Joiner and Railey Langford, while Glenwood’s lone hit came from Caroline Chapa.
Lee-Scott returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Trinity Presbyterian, while Glenwood will look to bounce back at home the same day against Dadeville.
Boys
The Glenwood baseball team showcased its depth and consistency across all phases of the game, sweeping a three-game series against Lee-Scott Academy with wins of 2-0, 15-5 and 9-2.
From a pitcher’s duel to an offensive outburst, the Gators (23-7) proved they could win in multiple ways, combining strong pitching, disciplined hitting and clean defense throughout the series.
Game one on Thursday set the tone as a low-scoring battle dominated by pitching. Glenwood’s Cooper Favors delivered a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 10 and keeping Lee-Scott off balance all afternoon. The game’s only runs came in the fifth inning when Carter Judah launched a solo home run to right field, giving the Gators a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish. Lee-Scott’s Braden Martin kept the Warriors within reach, but the offense managed just one hit.
Friday’s second game at John Meals Field was a stark contrast, turning into a high-scoring affair. Lee-Scott (16-10) struck first in the opening inning when Rylan Smith ripped a two-run double to give the Warriors an early 2-1 advantage.
Glenwood responded quickly and then broke the game open in the fourth inning, using a mix of patience at the plate and small-ball execution. The Gators loaded the bases through walks, bunts and aggressive baserunning before Hudson Campbell delivered a two-run single. Cal Lawrence followed with a double off the right-field wall, and Kade Cox added a two-run single as part of a six-run inning that flipped the game.
“We work hard on the fundamentals of the game,” Glenwood head coach Tim Fanning said. “We work on bunting during every practice and we work on hitting the ball to advance players on the bases.”
Glenwood finished with 12 hits and committed no errors in the 15-5 win, adding six more runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Lee-Scott’s highlight came on a two-run home run by Harrison Snow in the fourth, but the Warriors were unable to generate sustained offense.
“I felt like we really got comfortable at the plate in the fourth inning,” Fanning said. “We were patient early on and it paid off in the later innings.”
In the series finale, Glenwood again jumped out early and maintained control. Lee-Scott briefly tied the game at 2-2 behind a double from Rush Dunlap, but the Gators steadily pulled away with timely hits from Cal Lawrence and Judah, along with a home run from Andrew Wilkinson.
Asher Long delivered a strong performance on the mound in the final game, while Lee-Scott rotated multiple pitchers in an attempt to slow Glenwood’s offense.
Across the three games, Glenwood’s consistency proved to be the difference — combining dominant pitching performances, situational hitting and error-free defense.
Lee-Scott will look to rebound on the road against Benjamin Russell on Monday, while Glenwood aims to carry momentum into its regular-season finale Wednesday at Russell County.
