LAFAYETTE — The LaFayette Historic Preservation Board met on Tuesday of this past week to discuss and approve signage for a new pocket park, The Spot on the Square, that is currently under construction. Board Chairman Ed Yeargan called the meeting to order and welcomed the attendees.
Street, Sanitation and Cemetery Superintendent George Green briefed the board on an application that he had reviewed for the signage.
“What we are here tonight for is the historic board application of a new sign to be installed upon this square. Any time anything is installed upon the square, as far as the outside, it has to be historical. We received the application on May 6. We started processing it to make sure the signage, the square footage in order to be proper signage and the proper information was given from all the parties that were involved. Once we got that done, our meeting was set for all the information to be reviewed tonight. That is why we are here tonight for the historic board to review the new installation of the sign called The Spot park.”
LaFayette Main Street Executive Director Deanna Hand provided an overview of the signage under review.
“This was provided through a grant that LaFayette Main Street wrote in order to activate this vacant lot and spot,” said Hand. “It is not being used. We have signed a memorandum of understanding with the property owner David Howard. Our wish is to program this spot out. Letting 4-H, the library, different community and organizations have different events in this location since it is in such a fantastic area of the square. The grant paid for the signage. As you can see, it does meet all the requirements and regulations. It will be flush to the building’s exterior.”
Hand went on to describe the unique qualities of the signage. “The material of the sign will last and will not have any weathering effects,” she said. “It is metal so I urge you all to go feel it and look at it. The colors I thought were very vibrant yet still very elegant. I think that it is just a great fit for naming this pocket park The Spot on the Square. That is kind of what we have been referring to it as and it can be the happening spot on the square for different things to transpire in our wonderful city of LaFayette to keep the vibrancy going.”
With a unanimous vote, the board approved the application for the new signage and the meeting was adjourned.
