Each year, the Auburn-Opelika Elks Lodge #1834 is required to have a public “Flag Day” ceremony to honor and retire an American flag.
Boy Scout troop #218, which is sponsored by the lodge, led by the lodge’s Exalted Ruler Jeff Massey and Charter Scout Master/Lodge Member John Findley.
During the ceremony, the flag’s history was given and how it had changed throughout history as the scouts presented the flags that have flown over the United States of America. It was noted that the flag is to be honored, respected and that there is a proper way to dispose of the flag. At the end of the ceremony, a flag was properly folded then respective placed on the fire as everyone stood and either saluted or placed their hand their heart.
Massey said that “it was an excellent ceremony” and that he was “glad to see so many that came out for the ceremony.”
Scout Master Joe Higgins said that the troop has retired more than 100 flags this year that were tattered, faded or torn.
Individuals with flags in poor condition are asked to contact Troop #128 or the lodge to help properly dispose of the flag in a respectful way.
The lodge is located at 1944 Opelika Road in Auburn.
