In a game that should not have been that close the second-ranked Opelika Chiefs hung on for a 28 – 27 victory over the Capitol City Cobras in Tallahassee, Fla., last Saturday night.
The win pushes the Chiefs’ regular season record to 8 – 1 and sets up the regular season’s final game of the 2017 season this Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Beulah’s Bobcat Stadium, the Chiefs’ home field, against the third-ranked Greater New Orleans Jaguars.
Not only is this Opelika’s last chance to see the Chiefs in action in the APDFL regular season, but it should be one whale of a football game as the Jaguars (6 – 2) knocked off last year’s league champion Oklahoma City Bounty Hunters earlier this season. The Jags were upset by the sixth-ranked Hiawayi Robinson Falcons of Pritchard, Ala., on Saturday night.
Running back Ky-Shawn Powell, who played high school ball for the Reeltown Ramblers, carried the pigskin seven times for 98 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Chiefs to their win. Ky-Shawn also added three receptions for 20 yards. Chiefs’ quarterback Kyle Caldwell passed to Torrey Duster for the other touchdown.
Ladecker Johnson and Isaiah Person led the way on defense for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs have a core-group of 250 – 300 loyal fans who regularly attend home games and at least half of these follow the Chiefs out of town as well. Other Opelika football fans are missing a bet by not coming out to see this group of talented young men, all from our area, play some very entertaining football. The Beulah stadium is only 20 minutes from Opelika.
Come on out and support your local team. They represent us well.
