Last Monday, Smiths Station Mayor F.L. “Bubba” Copeland took to Facebook Live to announce that he and Council President Pro Tem Morris Jackson were issuing a temporary curfew within city limits.
This development comes on the heels of a growing number of COVID-19 cases in Lee County, although at press time no cases had been reported from Smiths Station. Copeland said this measure was enacted to curtail large social gatherings which had been a recurring problem since Gov. Kay Ivey’s Shelter in Place Order went into effect on April 4.
“I’m not excited about having to do this, but it needed to be done,” Copeland said.
The curfew is from 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time until further notice. This does not apply to essential workers or activities not restricted in Ivey’s order.
In his livestream, Copeland noted that the curfew will be enforced by members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
First offenses will result in a warning, second with a $500 fine and third offense is a sentence of up to 180 days in jail.
A copy of the proclamation with curfew details and information can be found on the City of Smiths Station’s Facebook page or online at www.smithsstational.gov.
