OPELIKA — Opelika High School Principal Kelli Fischer received a surprise honor Thursday night at the Opelika football game when she was announced as the AASSP 2025–26 Alabama High School Principal of the Year.

The recognition, presented by the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS), marks Fischer as the top high school principal in the state.

Earlier this fall, Fischer was named the District 4 High School Principal of the Year, advancing her to the statewide competition. This week, she was selected as the overall winner from finalists representing all nine Alabama districts.

As Alabama’s Principal of the Year, Fischer will represent the state in the National Principal of the Year program in Washington, D.C., in April.

“This recognition is not about me — it is a reflection of the incredible people who make Opelika High School so special,” Fischer said. “Our students, teachers, staff, families and community show up every single day for one another. They work tirelessly to meet students where they are, fill needs that often go unseen and pour into kids in ways that go far beyond math, science, history and English. My deepest hope as principal is that every student leaves OHS knowing they are valued, that they belong and that their life has purpose. Getting to serve as principal of Opelika High School is one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to shine a little extra spotlight on the powerful work happening in our building every day. Go Dawgs!”

Opelika City Schools officials praised the announcement, noting Fischer’s leadership, dedication and impact on students and staff at Opelika High School.

“I am very proud of Mrs. Fischer for receiving this momentous award,” said Dr. Kevin Davis, OCS superintendent. “It is well deserved considering the fantastic job she does at Opelika High School. I am most impressed by her love and commitment to students.”
