OPELIKA — The Ultimate Frisbee of Opelika (UFO) Summer League, a fun adult league put together by Opelika Parks and Recreation at the new Floral Park, has become very popular.
According to League Commissioner Reid Thackerson, the program has continued to grow as more players have joined each season.
Reid said the league started in the summer of 2024 and quickly became a favorite. He pointed out that the league has been growing steadily, with more and more people joining each year — from 64 to 82 to 93 players.
The league runs for 10 weeks, with two games every Tuesday evening during the summer. This regular schedule is perfect for players to get better and stay active. Each week, there’s also a fun session where attendees can learn some cool techniques and strategies for ultimate frisbee. Reid said this session is a great help for new players who want to improve.
Teams are picked through a draft before the season starts. The $45 registration fee covers a frisbee and a jersey.
Reid said he really appreciates Opelika Parks and Recreation for all their hard work in making this program happen. The league even gives out awards for Male and Female MVP and MIP, and it has a trophy for the winning team.
The Floral Park fields have bright lights and artificial turf, so frisbee fans can play all summer long, no matter what the weather. This year, Opelika Parks and Recreation went the extra mile by setting up a concession stand where locals can grab some food during and after the games. Plus, the new playground is a great spot for families to come and watch the games, play and have picnics.
