Dear editor,
We all know there’s something special about Opelika, and it’s why most of us have built our lives and raised our families here.
And nowhere is that more apparent than in our Historic Downtown District, the place that truly serves as the heart and soul of our town, a role it has held for many decades and will continue to hold for generations to come.
As we grow and move into the future, we need a mayor who understands our identity enough to know who we are, who we’ve been, and where we’re heading, and Eddie Smith is the only candidate who fits that bill in my mind.
Over his 20 years on the City Council, Eddie has been at the center of decisions and projects that have turned our downtown area from a place that was full of abandoned buildings where you didn’t feel safe at night to a vibrant celebration of stores, restaurants, and businesses that have made Opelika the envy of other cities across our state and region.
Eddie had the foresight to direct millions of grant dollars toward rebuilding, restoring and repairing our historic buildings and Railroad Avenue. His leadership is one of the primary reasons why Opelika has become such an attractive destination for entrepreneurs and businesses.
And through it all, he helped maintain the charm and traditions that make Opelika truly special.
I am supporting and voting for Eddie Smith for Mayor of Opelika, because he has the experience and a proven track record to lead Opelika into the future. I hope y’all will join me, because Eddie knows what it takes to keep the heart of Opelika intact.
Deke Hilyer
Opelika
