LEE COUNTY — After much discussion, the Lee County Commission approved a motion to start the process of hiring a chief operating officer (COO). The pay range for this new position will be between $175,000 and $225,000. The listing can be found at www.leeco.us/departments/human_resources/seeking_employment.
According to the listing, some, but not all, of the essential job functions of the COO would be to
- Oversee and administer county functions under the authority of the Lee County Commission.
- Develop and execute the county strategic plan to support the overall mission of the County.
- Manage and direct county operations pursuant to the stated goals and objectives of the County Commission to ensure that operational activities are aligned with the county’s strategic objectives.
- Work with the County Commission, appointing authorities and department heads to establish short-term objectives and long-range goals, and related plans and policies.
- Oversee employment decisions pursuant to established county policy.
- Promote communication and cooperation among divisions to create a spirit of unity in the organization.
- Coordinate with elected and appointed county officers in management of county affairs.
- Oversee the county’s financial structure, ensuring adequate and sound funding for the mission and goals as set by the County Commission.
- Manage financial planning and forecasting to support strategic initiatives.
- Identify funding sources to support existing and planned operations.
- Oversee the budgeting process and make recommendations to the county Commission during its budget-setting process to ensure operational activities are financially sound.
- Ensure the county’s compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and standards.
- Oversee planning, development, maintenance and efficiency of county facility construction and renovation projects.
- Oversee and manage special projects as established by the County Commission. Planning, directing and managing economic development activities, including attracting businesses, retaining existing ones and promoting economic growth within the county.
- Oversee and lead the development, writing and submission of grant proposals.
- Serve as County Commission liaison to other governmental entities.

The commission approved the minutes of commission meeting held on May 12.
The commission approved claims and procurement card transactions.
The commission approved travel requests.
The commission approved an announcement of an opening on the East Alabama Health Care Authority Board for a term that will expire Sept. 30, 2031.
The commission approved the motion to accept the revised travel policy with a split vote of three to two.
The commission approved a motion to approve the final plat for a property division request from the Kenneth Espy Vann Estate as presented by Lee County Engineer Justin Hardee. The proposed subdivision is located adjacent to Lee Road 644 and Lee Road 2046.
The commission approved a request from Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones for an ABC Liquor License Application from Hornet Wine and Spirits located at 7719 Alabama Highway 51.
The commission accepted the final settlement for the 2024 Tax Collection Year as presented by Lee County Revenue Commissioner Oline Price and approved it for submission to the state.
The commission approved a request for support letters for the Alabama BEAD Program for AT&T and Public Service Telephone Company as they apply for grants to assist the underserved and unserved areas in the county.
The commission approved the final plat for Stone Trace Subdivision as presented by Hardee
The commission approved a subdivision variance request as presented by Hardee.
Following an executive session, the commission approved a motion to hire J. Tutt Barrett of Dean & Barrett law firm as the interim county attorney, as the county starts a formal search to hire a new attorney.
