The women in agriculture hold a proud title throughout Alabama and the country. In fact, of Alabama’s nearly 65,000 farmers, more than 22,000 of them are women. Those proud individuals looking to expand their knowledge on the beef cattle industry should make plans to attend the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s 2020 Women in Ag workshop.
The two-day event is March 14 and 15 at the Auburn University Beef Teaching Unit.
Kelly Palmer, an Alabama Extension animal science regional agent and fellow woman in ag, said along with the rise in the number of women in the industry, the roles of women on the farm are shifting. Many women, along with taking more active roles within farming operations, are sole proprietors.
“With this shift, it is pivotal that we provide educational opportunities that fit the specific needs women have in their agricultural fields,” Palmer said.
Topics
This workshop will cover a variety of topics pertaining to beef cattle. These topics include:
- cattle handling
- BQA certification
- tractor driving/implement hookup and maintenance
- injections, implants and tagging
“Women will learn, through hands-on stations, skills to help them be more comfortable on their farms,” Palmer said.
