Ms. Vera W. Story, 89, of Opelika, passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2022.

Born Aug. 25, 1932 in Sparta (White Co.) Tennessee to parents James Rufus and Ova Wilson. Vera had many stories of walking miles to school in all types of weather. When she was older, her school bus was pumping carbon monoxide into the back of the bus and she was able to alert the bus driver while kids were passing out on the back of the bus. She loved her grandparents, Joel and Carrie Wilson and could tell many stories about them. After graduating from high school, she married and eventually moved to the Auburn/Opelika area where she remained for over 50 years. Vera loved people and her favorite jobs were at White County Hospital as a nursing assistant and at First Baptist Church in Auburn as a children’s daycare worker.

Vera was preceded in death by her son, Ronald J. Weaver; and her husband, James Emmett Story; and her parents.

She is survived by a son, Andrew S. Weaver (Oula); grandson, Andrew S. Weaver, Jr. “Steve” (Kali); a sister, Clara Domiano; and a granddaughter, Lily Weaver.

Vera was as good a friend, mother and neighbor as there could be. She will be greatly missed but not forgotten. A graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 31, 2022 at Garden Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations go to the American Cancer Society or the Lee County Humane Shelter.
