For nearly 300 days, a small group of people have been holding a daily demonstration for racial reconciliation in Auburn, known as the Toomer’s Corner Sit-In. It all started on June 1, with one person holding a “Stop Racism Now” sign. The same person returned to the same spot at the same time the next day. In the days and weeks that followed, others joined her and the “sit-in” has grown into a daily practice of civil discourse — rain, shine or whatever.

The group has been collecting data about the positive vs. negative responses from the community over time. Hundreds of people have stopped by for conversations or driven by with comments. Thousands of people have shown their support by honking or waving or other random acts of kindness

The group will be celebrating Day 300 on Saturday, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Toomer’s Corner. Local artists and musicians who have supported the sit-in since its beginning will be joining.

We hope you can join our community to recognize the dedication and commitment this small group of local people have paid to a much larger social issue unfolding in our country. Please contact the group on Instagram @toomerssitin or contact Kelli Thompson directly at 334-663-6331.
