Lewis Cooper Jr., Memorial Library Director Susan Delmas has announced her plans to retire at the end of this month, with her official retirement day being set for July 1.
Susan became the Director at Lewis Cooper Jr., Memorial Library on July 31, 2006. Prior to that she served as the Director of the Tarpon Springs Public Library in Tarpon Springs, Fla. for three years (2003-2006), where she was also the Chairperson of the Cooperative County Library System in Pinellas County. She was previously the Director of the Wheeler Basin Regional Library System in Decatur (1999-2003); and the Director of Marshall County Cooperative Library System in Arab, Alabama 1992 to 1999).
Delmas received her Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, with a double minor in history and business, from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1982; and received her Accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science from the same University in 1990. She is a member of the Professional Library Associations: American, Public and the State of Florida, as well as the Alabama Library Association. She is also a Rotarian, who has been named a Paul Harris Fellow.
Of her retirement plans, Mayor Gary Fuller stated, “On behalf of the City of Opelika let me just say that we appreciate Susan’s nine years of service to both the community and the Lewis Cooper Jr., Memorial Library. We wish her the very best as she begins this new chapter in her life.”
As she puts in her final few weeks at Cooper Library, Delmas states, “It has been a pleasure to work and live in Opelika. I have met some really great people who I hope will remain lifelong friends.”
Upon her retirement, Delmas will have spent nine years with the City of Opelika, and a little more than 19 years with the Alabama Library System. Added to her four years’ of service in Florida, she will have served in the Library Systems of both states a total of 23 years.
