Southern Union State Community College (SUSCC) is expanding transfer benefits for its students who wish to continue their education at the University of West Alabama (UWA).

At a ceremony on Tuesday, the two schools signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will guarantee admission to UWA for all SUSCC students who have a 2.0 GPA and 45 transferable credit hours or who have completed their associate degree from SUSCC.

Students interested in transferring to UWA will receive transfer advising on-campus at  SUSCC. A dedicated number of academic scholarships totaling up to $4,000 per year to UWA will be available for SUSCC students with a grade point average of 3.0 or better. These scholarships will be renewable for up to four consecutive semesters. SUSCC students who receive academic scholarships will also be eligible to apply for housing scholarships ($2,000 for their first year, non-renewable) to assist with and encourage on-campus
residency.

“We are so pleased to sign this agreement with West Alabama, as we are consistently looking for ways to help our students successfully continue their education after they leave Southern Union,” said Linda North, dean of academics at SUSCC.

With campuses in Wadley, Opelika and Valley, Southern Union State Community College is the second oldest community college in the state and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate’s degrees.
