In this week’s regular Lee County Commission meeting, the commissioners deferred as many issues as they acted on, deciding they need more information before acting on several items, not always a bad idea.
Commissioners authorized the chairman to execute federal aid agreements to resurface Lee Road 230, from Lee Road 240 to LR 246, and Lee Road 430, from US 280 to the Russell County line. These are ATRIP projects, funded 80 percent with federal money.
Acting county engineer Patrick Harvill announced that resurfacing of Lee Road 54 (the Society Hill Road) from the Macon County line to the Lazy Bee intersection resumed Monday morning, March 28.
The commission also approved, at Mr. Harvill’s request, an application by Boy Scout Troop 128 of Phenix City to adopt a mile of road on Lee Road 243 across from Smiths Station High School. The application is to the Alabama PALS program which stands for “People Against a Littered State.” Chairman English commented that this was the first new application the commission had seen in some time.
The commission also approved a special event beer license to The Hoot Yard, located at 554 LR 799, mid-way between I-85 Exit 66 and U.S. Hwy. 29. The event, slated for May 7, will involve several live bands, vendors, at least three craft breweries. The venue is open air with several tents and will run from late morning until 9 or 10 p.m. Opelika charity, The Big House, will share in the proceeds from the event.
In other action the commission
tabled resolutions to approve the Spay and Neuter Professional Services Agreement, the updated Mutual Aid agreement with the Lee County Firefighters Association and a requested variance from the county’s Access Management Policy (LCAMP) until more information was made available,
approved April 5, 2016 as County Day of Recognition for National Service,
proclaimed April as Fair Housing Month for the county,
approved a retail liquor license for the Docks Restuarant at 9883 Lee Road 379 (north end of Long Bridge) and
approved an agreement and resolution for National Voter Registration Act mailings.
