Fun, food, romance, laughter and a little bit of mystery are what guests can expect at the fourth Opelika Theatre Company production Feb. 14. The troupe will present “Cupidity,”  a Valentine’s Day themed murder mystery dinner show at Niffers by the Tracks in downtown Opelika. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m.
“Cupidity” was written by Death Du Jour playwright Phyllis Appleby from Memphis, Tenn. “This show is about an eccentric, well-to-do millionaire who owns the prominent Cardell Greeting Card Company. He is planning to launch a new e-courting card venture on Valentine’s Day, an idea that was conceived by his late wife before her tragic death … from a chocolate overdose,” said Marty Moore, who is involved with organizing the event. “He has solicited the popular Las Vegas headliner Dante Apollo, who is most unlucky in love to be his first e-courting card match at the Valentine’s Launch Party. Pair all of this with a crazy matchmaker, a zany chocolatier artist, a nutty love advice columnist, a conniving computer code programmer and two super zealous sleuths and you have a recipe for hilarious fun and entertainment.”
For budding actors and actresses, the remaining participants in the show will be chosen from the reservation list, giving the audience first-hand improvisation experience.
According to information provided by the theatre group, the mystery dinner theatre shows are fundraising events designed to help the organization get on its feet in a fun and entertaining way, rather than traditional fundraisers that sell a product.
“Our goal is to be able to produce our first show in late summer with a children’s production and follow in mid-September with an adult comedy,” the release stated.
The OTC is currently under the umbrella of the Community Foundations of East Alabama and therefore classified as a non-profit organization. As a result, a portion of ticket prices are tax-deductible.
Tickets are now available for purchase and cost $99/couple or $50 for a single ticket. Each ticket includes a three-course dinner, tips, taxes and the show. Guests are also in for gifts and surprises for their participation. Niffers by the Tracks will offer a special Valentine’s Day themed menu. To make a reservation, call 334-663-4480.
