Special to the
Opelika Observer

The Opelika SportsPlex and Aquatics Center is bringing in 2020 with a new year promotion that is sure to excite anyone with a gym membership in mind for the new year. Everyone who starts a new membership from Jan. 1 to 10 will receive their first month free.
To take advantage of this promotion, interested parties need only to stop by the front desk and fill out an application during the promotional period.
Opelika SportsPlex memberships include a wide variety of amenities that include an indoor pool, group fitness classes, childcare, weight and cardio equipment, steam rooms, basketball courts, racquetball courts, pickleball courts, indoor and outdoor walking tracks, soccer fields, a disc golf course and a children’s playground. In addition to their amenities, the Opelika SportsPlex also offers all new members a free personal training session to all members when they sign-up.
This is a great opportunity for those members to discuss goals, acquaint themselves with the equipment and come up with a plan for moving forward.
The Opelika SportsPlex’s motto is “We have something for everyBODY”, and according to Fitness Director, Alden Mezick, they stand by that.
“We’ve had people from age 10 all the way to, I’ve had someone age 90 in my classes,” Mezick said. “We have something that could fit absolutely anyone.
Anything from low intensity classes that are perfect for someone suffering from hip pain, back pain or arthritis or we have something that can push even the most athletic or fit person that you could possibly find.”
The Opelika SportsPlex has multiple different rooms to house group fitness classes, so they are able to offer three to four different classes at one time. In the morning, members may often find themselves choosing from a cycling class in the cycling studio, aqua aerobics in the pool, Zumba in the group fitness room or Silver Sneakers in the Adult Activity Center.
According to Opelika’s Parks and Recreation Department Public Relations Coordinator Laura Leigh Chesser, many seniors could potentially qualify for a free Silver Sneakers membership through their insurance provider. Most insurance plans can be checked by the Opelika SportsPlex Adult Activity Coordinator Valeri White.
For those with reservations about beginning a new commitment so soon after Christmas, it is important to note that the Opelika SportsPlex does not charge sign-up fees, cancelation fees or lock members into a contract. People can choose to pay their fees monthly or yearly, and that is all they are responsible for.
