Opelika Parks and Recreation director Sam Bailey wants citizens’ input on what Parks and Rec should do with the space formerly occupied by the pool at the Denson Drive Recreation Center.

In May, workers began filling in the former pool with dirt, as movement in the pool’s foundation, leakage issues and other mechanical problems would have prevented its further use as a swimming pool.

“We have one year to wait for all of the packed earth and ground in that area to settle,” Bailey said, “so, in the mean time, we want to encourage citizens to contact us and let us know how they think we should use that space.”

Some previously mentioned possible uses for the area include creating a skate park or turning the grounds into a pickleball court. Pickleball is a sport that combines elements from tennis, ping pong and badminton and is played with a racquet.

Bailey said any citizen with ideas for the space could contact him at the Opelika Sportsplex at (334) 705-5560.
