For the Opelika Observer

The Opelika Observer welcomes another new student intern, Emery Lay. Lay is from Birmingham, Alabama, and will be a senior this fall at Auburn University.

Lay is majoring in journalism and minoring in political science. On top of that, she is graduating a year early in May 2022.

She is enjoying her time interning at the Opelika Observer and hopes that it will lead to more opportunities.

“I’d love to work for a newspaper someday,” Lay said.

Lay has already had valuable experience writing for student news publication, The Auburn Plainsman. She was recently given the role of campus editor and enjoys writing about people and their lives. “It’s really fun to hear people’s stories.”

She said she has big plans for the future, hopefully someday writing for a newspaper like the New York Times and doing investigative reporting.

In Lay’s spare time she likes to read and work on her writing. A book that she currently can’t put down is “The Screw Tape Letters” by C.S. Lewis. Lay also recently became interested in true crime podcasts. Additionally, she enjoys watching television including her all-time favorite shows: Friends and Gilmore Girls.

After graduation, Lay said she is not quite ready to leave The Plains.

“I’ll probably stick around Auburn and find a job writing somewhere,” Lay said.

Although her plans for the future are not yet concrete, they look very bright.
