The Opelika Exchange Club annually recognizes the city’s outstanding sheriff deputies, local policemen, highway troopers and firefighters, and this year the club has begun to recognize the outstanding EMT service people.
There is one other award that is given by the club each year that is very unique and special because its recipient does not have the public appearance and immediate recognition these aforementioned ones have.
It is the Book of Golden Deeds. It is awarded to an individual who is not necessarily a public figure, someone unknown and unsung. They are the ones who faithfully serve others with all their heart.
They may work with young people, the elderly, the needy or the sick. They may do it through some club, church, organization or all by themselves. In any of myriad ways, they serve because they sense a need to which they can contribute and because it gives them joy. The Exchange Club feels it is an honor to recognize such people and give them some appreciation for the way they live their lives.
Perhaps you know someone who would be worthy of this recognition. If you do, send a letter explaining why they should receive this award. The award ceremony will be held at the Lee County Fairgrounds on Feb. 18, where the recipient of the award will be announced.
