The Opelika Chiefs play their home opener football game at Moore Stadium tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Chiefs, Opelika’s entry in the Xtreme South Football League, a spring semi-professional developmental league, are playing their inaugural season and are already 2 and 0 with road wins over Panama City and Montgomery.
They have a challenge ahead of them in tomorrow’s game as they take on the Tuskegee Arymen, last year’s XSFL champion. But as head coach Hunter Price said, “If you want to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.” And Price’s goal is just that: this year’s XSFL championship.
The Chiefs’ 47-man roster includes players from all over the country, even one player from Alaska, Price said. A few of those whose names readers might know are Ralph Spry, wide receiver from Auburn and the U. of Minn.; Tracy Brooks from Loachapoka, a hot-shot baseball player who batted .776 his senior year trying his hand at football; Greg Moss, a defensive lineman from Alabama; Cam Gross, former Auburn linebacker  and Latrell Jenkins, running back, Auburn High graduate and last year’s Most Valuable Player for the GDFL.
These players play for the love of the game and, for many, the hope that they can move up to higher levels in professional football. They play an  exciting brand of football. The Chiefs won their first two games by scores of 36-0 and 62-0 against veteran teams.
Tickets cost $8 for adults, $5 for youth 6 to 12, and ages 6 and under get in free. In addition, the first 50 fans get free shakers. Moore Stadium is on 7th Ave. between N. 8th and N. 5th Streets behind the Brownfield House. Come out and support the Chiefs.
