Mitchell, Sr.

Daniel Elmer Mitchell, Sr., born April 18, 1934 in Opelika, Alabama, departed this life on May 1, 2017 to join the many others who have gone on before, especially his first wife, Nancy Sprayberry Mitchell, who passed on July 1, 1998.
Elmer was always interested in political affairs and served on the Opelika City Commission from 1964-1973, retiring after his third term. He also served as president of the Opelika Exchange Club and served with the Guy Hunt administration for five years as Regional Representative in Economic Affairs. Elmer was predeceased by his brothers, Virgil Mitchell, John Mitchell, Bruce Mitchell and Raymond Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Jean Stewart Mitchell; his sons, Dan Mitchell (Jenny) and Billy Mitchell (Barbara); three grandchildren, Jenifer Mitchell Lee, Andrea Mitchell and Brandon Mitchell (Michelle); three great-grandchildren, and two stepchildren, Babeth Kelley and Sean Kelley (Pat). A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jeff Meyers officiating. Visitation will precede the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Opelika.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to East Alabama Cancer Center, 2000 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika, AL 36801, will be appreciated.
