Following is a statement from Coroner Bill Harris on having the Morgue Disaster Trailer deployed to the area in the event of a surge of COVID-19 related deaths.
“In an abundance of proactive preparedness, East Alabama Medical Center requested through the Coroner’s office use of the Disaster Morgue trailer that is part of the State Mortuary Operations Response Team assets that are stationed in Lee County. The Coroner’s office made the official request through the Lee County Emergency Management Agency and the trailer was deployed. The trailer can hold a total of 18 bodies. It was strictly deployed in the event of a worst-case scenario if the hospital morgue becomes overwhelmed during the COVID-19 crisis we are in right now. We pray that its use is not needed but wanted to be ready in the event things progressed to the point it was.”
