Major James E. McLawhorn, born in Jakin, Georgia, 1932, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021. The eldest son of Bruce and Mavis McLawhorn, he was predeceased by Shirley B. McLawhorn, his devoted wife of 64 years.

Jim was a proud A.P.I. graduate and later earned his Masters and Ph.D. in higher education, graduating from The College of William and Mary and Nova Southeastern.

Jim began his military career at Langley Air Force Base, Tactical Air Command in Hampton, Virginia as a navigator in the 345-bomber wing. It was there that he met and married his wife and life-partner Shirley.

After they married and started their family, Jim and Shirley delighted in taking the “road less traveled” and collecting mementos to mark the milestones of their life together.

Jim is survived by his sons James McLawhorn and Richard McLawhorn (Carrie), granddaughter Mattie McLawhorn; brother Bruce M. McLawhorn, USN retired (Phyllis), and Rae Hill, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The family wishes to thank Jeanette Strickland, Johnnie Mae Williams and Gwen Scott for their love and care; and James Benson and Gordon Cooper for the years of friendship.

A graveside service for family was held last week. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you carry-out a kind act in his memory.
